Skylights

Skylight Installation, Replacement and Repair

Skylights bring daylight into homes with tight lots and few windows, which describes a lot of San Francisco. They are also one of the most common sources of roof leaks, and most of those leaks are flashing failures, not the glass.

Ascender Roofing Solutions installs, replaces, repairs and reflashes skylights on shingle and flat roofs across San Francisco and the Peninsula.

What we do

New skylight installation on shingle and flat roofs
Replacement of old, fogged, cracked or leaking skylights, including VELUX
Solar-powered venting skylights
Skylight leak repair and reflashing
New step and counter flashing and underlayment around the frame

Skylight installation

We install new skylights on shingle and flat roofs. Framing, flashing and interior finish are scoped in your written proposal, so you know exactly what is included.

Skylight replacement

Old, fogged, cracked or leaking skylights are replaced with new units, including VELUX skylights, and new flashing. Replacing the flashing with the unit is what keeps the new skylight dry.

Solar-powered skylights

Venting skylights that open and close on solar power need no wiring to the house. They are a good fit for kitchens and bathrooms that need light and fresh air.

Skylight repair and reflashing

Most skylight leaks come from failed flashing around the frame. We install new step and counter flashing and underlayment around the skylight. Reflashing is often done during a reroof, and we also do it as a standalone repair. Roof repair →

Common questions

Why is my skylight leaking?+
Usually because the flashing around the frame has failed, not the glass. Condensation can also look like a leak. We check both.
Should I repair or replace my skylight?+
If the unit is sound and only the flashing has failed, reflashing is enough. Fogged, cracked or very old units are usually worth replacing, along with the flashing.
Do you install VELUX skylights?+
Yes. We install and replace VELUX skylights, including solar-powered venting models.
What is a solar-powered skylight?+
A venting skylight that opens and closes using a small solar panel, so no wiring to the house is needed.
Do I need a permit for a skylight?+
Requirements vary by city. We confirm what applies to your home in the written proposal.
